Forage for Mushrooms in Maine

Mushrooms falling into a wooden bowl.

There is something immensely satisfying about foraging for mushrooms in Maine. Strolling the woodland paths, your boots crush the earth and release the damp, earthy scent of Fall’s forest floor. Crisp Autumn air carries the whiff of woodsmoke. You stoop and inspect, sniff and squint, and search for a smorgasbord of tasty varieties in a multitude of locales. Mushrooms in Maine sprout from stumps, hide under moss, strain skyward through fallen leaves, and cling to tree trunks.

Ranging from black trumpet, hen of the wood, chanterelle, and — appropriately named — lobster mushrooms (to name just a few), experts say there are close to 4,000 different species of mushrooms in Maine.

Plucking them from the earth and filling up your basket provides the ultimate foodie thrill. But, knowing which fungi to harvest and which to leave on the tree requires skill and experience. That’s where we come in.

Our Mushroom Hunting Getaway Package (available through mid-October) includes two hours with an expert guide in our local woods. You’ll learn about different mushroom species (both edible and poisonous) and bring back the goods to be whipped up in our kitchen. This package also includes two nights' lodging, sumptuous breakfasts each morning, and a five-course dinner for two.
