Midcoast Maine things to do in November: The Art Edition

Midcoast Maine things to do in November: The Art Edition

As the leaves begin to fall and Camden shifts into quiet season, there is still lots to do in our stunning seaside town. To make things even better, lines are shorter, seats are easier to buy, and gallery and retail businesses are less crowded. Over the next few weeks, we’ll profile Midcoast Maine things to do in November — between the “season of the leaves” and the “season of snow.”

This week — Come for our gorgeous rooms and fabulous food and stay for the art!

November Art Shows in Midcoast Maine

Form Follows Function, Page Gallery, Camden: A group show that bridges the gap between functional objects and fine art. Items featured include original book illustrations, hand forged knives, furniture, ceramics, glasswares, and bronze vases. Importantly, it illustrates Frank Lloyd Wright’s insight that, “form follows function – that has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union.” (through November 30)

Fall Nature Art Show, Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, Rockland: This group show focuses on nature and its representation through the eyes of multiple artists. Karen & Ret Talbot of Rockland display scientific illustrations and photos that highlight marine fisheries and ocean conservation around the world. Jordan Chalfant of Bar Harbor shows paintings reflecting the vitality of wildlife on Petit Manan Island. John Drury, of Vinalhaven, displays photographs showing the dynamic diversity of things to see on and around the refuge islands. (through November 25)

Hanging by a Thread, The University of Maine Hutchinson Center, Belfast: This unique show is in its final weeks and includes more than 50 works by Maine fiber artists. Get up close and personal with techniques and forms of using thread and string to create wearable art, various vessels, and wall hangings. (through November 22)

Fall Fine Arts & Antiques Auction, Thomaston Place Auction Galleries, Thomaston: Don’t miss this large Autumn auction of more than 1,000 lots of fine art, antiques, and decorative items. On Friday, you’ll find Native American, African and Oceanic artifacts, treasures of American popular culture, portrait miniatures, and estate jewelry. On Saturday, discover fine art and antiques. And finally, on Sunday, take out your check book for 20th Century decorative arts. Auction items can be viewed in advance at the auction house website. (November 8-10)
